For years, cycling enthusiasts have been checking off biking the Oregon Coast Bike route from their must-ride list. The popular route runs the length of the coast, covering 370-380 miles of scenic landscapes, connecting state parks, quaint communities, and breathtaking viewpoints! Start planning your adventure with our brief guide below.

ABOUT THE OREGON COAST BIKE ROUTE

The historic route starts in the town of Astoria, right on the border of Washington state, and mostly follows US Hwy 101 down to Brookings and into California. Cyclists begin their journey from the northernmost point of the route and spend on average about six to eight days making their way south to the border using the mountainous coastal bikeway.

Official Oregon Coast Bike Route signs mark the entire course to guide bikers, both novice and experienced, throughout their ride. So, whether you decide to go solo, with friends, or even through a bike tour company, it’s easy to do so!

QUICK TIPS

Planning is key to making the most out of your trip, so be sure to follow these tips for a safe and fun ride!

  • Wear bright clothing.
  • Wait out the fog before starting your ride.
  • Wear the proper safety gear, including a helmet.
  • If you stop, do so off the roadway.
  • Carry light snacks for energy and plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • The bridges on the route can expose riders to strong wind gusts, and Oregon DOT recommends that riders use the sidewalk if uncomfortable.
  • If you plan on riding at night or early morning, be sure you properly equip your bike with a white light and the necessary reflectors or red lights.

Of course, you don’t have to ride the entire bike route to enjoy the same experience. The scenic byway runs through all of the picturesque coastal towns and scenic viewpoints, and it’s easy to make a day of enjoying the natural beauty that has made Oregon a popular tourist destination, at whatever point you choose.
