Denali is a big part of the Anchorage skyline. The tallest peak on the continent pops up on the northern horizon. It’s within easy reach. Flightseeing excursions take off from Anchorage and the town of Talkeetna for a day of flying in the Alaska Range. Some itineraries even include glacier landings in the shadow of Denali. Flightseeing tours from Anchorage are perfect for travelers with a long “to see and do” list.
The mountain looms large, but it’s just the most obvious attraction in Denali National Park. Wildlife including caribou, brown and black bears, wolves, moose, and fox are among the species that call the park home.
It’s about five hours to the park entrance by car or motor coach. The Alaska Railroad makes the journey in about seven hours. Several air charter services also take off from Anchorage and touch down at the runway in the park for those short on time.
Once inside the park, shuttle and tour buses offer a variety of options, ranging from narrated tours to simple transportation for visitors interested in disembarking to hike or camp. Much of the road is closed to private vehicles. Maintained hiking trails in the park are concentrated around the Denali Visitor Center, and off-trail hiking options are practically limitless beyond.
The Denali Visitor Center is one of the best places to start a visit. View exhibits, watch films on Denali, or join one of the many ranger-led programs that begin at the center.
Denali is also home to a working sled dog kennel. Dog sled teams help patrol the park in the winter, but the dogs (and puppies) are ready for a visit no matter the season.
